Proudest Hometown Merchandise
Oaklandish
"Best of the East Bay" - April 6, 2005
Nobody does East Bay pride like Oaklandish. Where else can you find Oakland Booty underwear, T-shirts advertising Oaksterdam, or Royal Crown's individually airbrushed mesh baseball caps featuring locally inspired graffiti or anime-style designs? The shop also sells other locally made treats: jewelry, mix CDs, herbal soaps and oils by Dis-Scent, lapel pins -- Kwik Way badge, anyone? -- as well as the "saints and sinners of Oakland" poster line portraying locals such as Isadora Duncan, Bobby Hutton, Hell's Angel Sonny Barger, and funk innovator Larry Graham. You don't have to be in a buying mood to enjoy Oaklandish -- there's a fun museum case filled with East Bay historical tidbits like the issue of Time magazine with Patty Hearst on the cover, original pressings from Flipper and Green Day, and an old print of Eldridge Cleaver's Soul on Ice. You're also welcome in the hangout lounge, where you can just kick back on the sofas and play Nintendo or Raiders Checkers and watch selections from a video archive heavy on locally-related documentaries, or even dub them in return for a small donation. The "Folklandish" library also offers East Bay-related books and zines for perusal or copying. Oaklandish also hosts live music on the second Saturday of every month and poetry slams on selected Thursday nights.
